This week, the Corlears community prepares for graduation. Just 7 days away, this celebration will mark the end of one journey, and the beginning of another. A full morning of festivities, graduation is a time for our 10s families to take pride in their accomplishments, and for the rest of the Corlears community to celebrate their growth. Even our youngest students participate in the ceremony, giving the entire community an opportunity to witness the amazing progress all of our students have made throughout the year at each age level. The focus, however, remains on the 10s and this milestone in their lives.
Graduation is an emotional event. These students have grown up at Corlears, and as they prepare to take on their next challenge they along with their parents reflect on all that have experienced over the course of their time at Corlears; ultimately leaving with a sense of accomplishment and excitement for the future. In the weeks leading up to Graduation, the 10s beam with pride as they talk about their new schools, even wearing t-shirts and hats that display their logos. While leaving Corlears will be sad, the transition is also exhilarating; a time for the 10s to take pride in the hard work they put in during their time at this school and in reaching this educational landmark. Thanks to their years here, and the support of their teachers and families, they leave as confident young leaders that will undoubtedly contribute to and shape their new community as they have done so with ours.
Graduation is not only a celebration of our current students, but of the community as it extends to alums. In years past, Corlears has welcomed back alums as commencement speakers and to assist with the proceedings. As a Corlears tradition, sibling alums return on this special day, not only witness their brothers and sisters graduate but to pass the symbolic torch in the form of their diploma. On stage, these siblings share a special moment that embodies the spirit of community at Corlears and the long lasting connection all members of our community share.
Graduation is an event enjoyed by all at Corlears. All students grace the stage during the ceremony and share a song with their friends, teachers, parents and staff . Beyond the community within these walls, the excitement around graduation spills into the streets of the city. Ks teacher Joy says that one of her favorite parts of the day is “walking with the banners for your age level… the whole neighborhood comes out to watch. People from Google, the Deli... everyone that comes in and out of those doors stops and watches the procession. It’s a complete community event. It really reinforces the community aspect of the school that we build from the beginning and a great way to end the year.”
Just a week away, all of Corlears is looking forward to celebrating our 10s class at Graduation. While we are losing the physical presence of these community members, we welcome the next 10s class and look forward to seeing them take on the challenge of being the leaders of the school. As this incredible group of students moves on, we know they will stay connected... like the school song says "when we go our separate ways we will remember our Corlears Days. When we go our separate ways, our roots go down"
